warmer months [poetry]

Curled in sheets

I awaken into soft morning

One side of the bed is empty, cold

For a second I panic

But then comes the unwelcome memory

This isn’t a nightmare

This is real

These sheets will never embrace me the way you did

I will never be warm again

Even in summer

Ice will fill me

My veins, my heart
